The Official Unofficial NaNoWriMo Thread (of Doom)
« Thread started on: Nov 2nd, 2007, 2:00pm » |
|
This thread is for questions/encouragement/progress regarding participation in NaNoWriMo!
Yes, that's right!
It's November, which for me means participating in National Novel Writing Month! ...(Otherwise better known as NaNoWriMo)
Don't let the name scare you. It is not geared toward novel-writers. It's specifically geared toward people who like to write, but don't think they can write a 'novel' in a month.
Never written anything of length before? Perfect! When I participated for the first time, I'd never written anything creatively that was longer than a page. I only roleplayed, which turned out to be more than enough practice.
Nobody ever needs to see your writing, so quality is totally not an issue. It's just an event to get people to write. And, as anyone who has practiced anything knows, that any writing is better than no writing.
Want to join, even though it's after November 1st? That's just fine. There are plenty of people who join or start writing way late. You might have to work a little harder, but you can do it! Also, even if you don't make it to the end word count, it is worth it anyway!!
The goal is to write 50k words in a month.
Yes...50k.
Yes, it's insane. But, it's also doable.
I did it last year and it was one of the most fun and amazing things I've ever done. You and the rest of the world basically just sit down for the month of November and write...alot.
I was a full-time student in illustration school when I did it last year. I barely scraped by, and there were several days where I didn't write at all...but I still did it.
The confidence I earned from that is still carrying me.
Anyway...before you start making excuses (because I've heard them all already) go look at the site.
It's totally insane, laid-back, and *really* fun.
The best part (lol) is that there are already a bunch of PI and Murrah people participating, and I'm totally bribing you with Murrah-related prizes! (see the following post)
Go look and sign up!

I've reached somewhere around 5,500 words. XD And even though I feel that it is really terrible, I have withheld my inner Critic/Editor and just concetrated on progress.
Congrats, Zelly, on 10k words. That's great!

Must....start.....writing! *is so behind* This is such a good idea, by the way. I am behind on reading about it...but what a great way to encourage! I still am having trouble even thinking about starting a new project with so much hanging over my head, but. Urg! Must start!
I also need to do whatever I need to do to officially enter the contest...heh.

I don't remember if I read an answer to this question, but... can we write on another story during the month and have it count toward our 50k goal?
I'm currently writing on Story A, but Story B inside my head keep rattling around to be written too. Now I'm conflicted.

I agree with Vhendi! I've got my fantasy story down, but I want to write a love story too

I think I joined. XD
How legal is it to begin a completely different story in the middle of your current story because it is losing your interest and you don't want to waste time on it, but you want to keep the word count? it's only 830 words. I could probably very easily make that up, but you know. Just wondering.

If you start a story over, then I don't think you can really count the previous words.
but, if you want to work on two stories at once, I suppose that would be alright. Just, no more than that, and only count the writing done for those two stories.

Okay, that's what I figured, but I thought I'd ask. I'll just keep trucking with this one! I have about 1500 words now...
I'm curious, does MS Word word count work, or do you have to use something else?

It works *enough,* but the official nano word counter is up now. Somehow, nano's word counter and Word's counter can differ by several hundred words sometimes, so I would go with nano's count.

Whoot! I'm at 15,635 words!
I'm so stupid, though... Two days ago, I went to update my word count, but I transposed two of the digits. So instead of my my word count going up by 100 words, it went down. I felt really smart when I noticed it ten minutes ago.
