« Thread started on: Oct 4th, 2009, 10:15pm »

As a cellist I started wondering how the unstrument could be adapted for Murrah Hooves. I basically spent my drive to and from work the past couple days trying to figure it out. Random, I know! tongue cheesy

First I got the mental picture of an instrument closer to sitar than violoncello, with a skinnier, longer neck and smaller, squatter body, and fewer strings (perhaps just two?). Buttons placed along the neck that, when pushed, would press a bar against the strings. It might be a little difficult to play more than two buttons, or two buttons that aren't next to each other (depending on how far the main 'fingers' can stretch).

Tonally, I hear it as being a pentatonic instrument, with the strings tuned a P5th apart. Pentatonics are cool! (Although I read somewhere that every time you write a Parallel 5th, Bach kills a kitten! :/ ).

The frog of the bow would be shaped to fit between the two main 'fingers', and probably more bow-shaped like the baroque era bows. smiley

Gut strings from some kind of ungulate, and the bow hairs from -- you got it! Tail fringe! cheesy

Does this sound like it could work?

Interesting, definately. Now that I'm thinking about it, would it be easier for them to play a plucked instrument than a bowed one? It would eliminate the need to press down strings, at least. Also, harps and lyres are cool. Maybe both are possible.

I tend to hear diatonic modes rather than pentatonic or other unusual scales, so I'll have to see which scales fit best. Definately not our chromatic scale, though, or simple major/minor.

I know this much about music ----> .

BUT oh my gravy, strings! cheesy I <3 them! The cello is my favorite to listen to, Kraks! ^__^ I think it'd be awesome to have more instruments, and definately strings.

(I own a violin, and I played for a year, but oh man major fail in that department.)

I think I'm going to try and record a clip of pentatonics today after work, if I'm not too bushed.

I'll have to do a little freshen-up research on diatonics, it's been a while since College! tongue smiley

Diatonic is just the regular major/natural minor system, with the modes starting on other notes than 1 or 6. I've always liked Dorian, which starts on 2, but they're all interesting to listen to.

Yeah, I know the basics, it's just the details are a little foggy. tongue Dorian stars on D, right? I'ma go look it up! O.O

I've always liked Phrygian, basically just because I get to say 'Phrygian'. What an awesome word. smiley Phrygian Phrygian Phrygian. Don't even know if I'm spelling right ... cheesy

I'm sorry, I can't do it, not right now anyways. (record for you, that is).

I just pulled my cello out for the first time since July and I. Suck. O.O Intonation was completely off, most importantly. Besides that, I need a new bridge and a new set of strings (all together a good $400, I'm sure). I recorded over a dozen times and I just couldn't bring myself to air any of them, knowing how much better I am then the crap I'm bustin out today. X(
